Best Of 2014

SNAX’S TOP 10 (plus 1) 2014:

ADEN – PART OF ME EP – ULTRAMAJIC
This 4 song EP features the astonishing “Say And Do” which has made it into every set I’ve spun since it came out and will no doubt continue to. Released on Jimmy Edgar’s fine Ultramagik label, this music can only be described as melancholic cuntiness.

PRINCE – ART OFFICIAL AGE – WARNER BROS.
While Prince fans look forward to his long awaited Warner Brothers re-issues, we were delighted to hear him whip out this terrific new release. Updated but not derivative, this is Prince claiming his influence on modern pop yet still sounding fresh.

JAD AND THE LADYBOY – STEP IN MY DIRECTION – EXPLOITED
Another dance floor staple. The Merry Clayton sample will make your head explode.

BLACK BANANAS – ELECTRIC BRICK WALL – DRAG CITY
The latest from Royal Trux singer Jennifer Herrema’s new band lives up perfectly to it’s title. Electronic soul dosed with thoroughly psychedelic noise and topped with Herrema’s trademark growl make for a dance record you’ve truly never heard before.

LA FLEUR – KATTFLICKAN (ART OF TONES REMIX) – POWER PLANT
With the ‘Feline’ EP, Swedish born La Fleur released her inner cat woman this year. Spontaneously combusting dance floors ensued.

EX HEX – RIPS – MERGE RECORDS
Hoo-ray, glam is back! Mary Timony’s band have served up excellent song-writing, ultra-catchy hooks and early 70’s style production with a nod to the Go-Go’s. Resistance is futile.

ROTCIV – LUV013 – LUV SHACK
Brazilian born Rotciv’s tracks on this Luv Shack split 12 inch with Space Echo cement his reputation as one of the best producers of sexy soulful disco around. Stand out track ’Just Take Me Higher’ does just what the title suggests.

JUNGLE – JUNGLE – XL RECORDINGS
This UK soul collective delivers a terrific record chock full of influences that are simultaneously vivid yet hard to pinpoint. The tune ‘Busy Earning’ with it’s tight vocals and top level production roped me in and made me come back for more.

GUSGUS – ‘ANOTHER LIFE’ – KOMPAKT
How does GusGus keep coming up with these mind melting rave chords?? Team those up with fine arrangements and Earth’s soaring vocal, and you’ve got the stand out track from this year’s ‘Mexico’ LP.

GALAXIANS – PERSONAL DISCO COMPONENT – DITHER DOWN
This was a nice surprise. Trashy electro disco rock that’s 80’s influenced but not cheezy. Yes, please.

MAVIN – STILL BELIEVE – PAKALOLO CITY RECORDS
Ex-Manhooker front man Mavin’s luscious debut is also the first release to drop from his songwriting production team (with his partner, yours truly) BonomoLeMagass. The 707, strings and choir will surely make a believer out of you.
